Summary

Ideal for learners working in the industry with some general work experience and have a desire to develop a career in Outdoor Vegetable Production. 

Skills allow learners to work in a self-managed capacity with some responsibility for other staff and have an overview of key aspects of outdoor vegetable production operations.

The New Zealand Apprenticeship includes:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) - Outdoor Vegetable Production
  • New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Production (Level 4) - Outdoor Vegetable Production

This programme takes 40 months to complete and learners can start anytime.

Learning outcomes

The New Zealand Apprenticeship in Outdoor Vegetable Production is available as either a composite level 3 and 4 programme, or level 4 only. By the end of training apprentices will have learned the skills to:

  • Supervise and provide instruction to team members using a range of effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Implement and monitor outdoor crop production operations to achieve production goals and standards, including:
    • operational tasks from planting to harvesting including pest and disease management, agrichemical use and understanding plant growing cycles.
    • quality standards and regulatory requirements.
    • production goals.
    • crop production activities.
    • regular management reports.
    • routine maintenance scheduling
    • sustainable production techniques
    • environmental risk management
    • crop harvesting plans.
  • Implementing and monitoring an outdoor vegetable crop protection plan to meet production goals and standards including:
    • Managing agrichemicals in accordance with NZS 8409:2004.
  • Implement and monitor outdoor vegetable production management techniques to optimise crop production including:
    • plant biology
    • plant management techniques used to optimise production
    • Standard operating procedures.
