Summary

This progamme is for those with general horticulture experience and want a career in horticulture, love being outdoors, and are passionate about garden maintenance and plants.

Amenity horticulture is about growing, establishing and managing gardens and public spaces to create vibrant spaces everyone can enjoy.

This programme is the first step up to supervising a team and managing seasonal plans for amenity sites.

Learners will develop an understanding of environmental effects on plant growth, turf botany and management and plant classification, and also learn to interpret, implement and monitor a complete work programme across an amenity site.

This programme takes 22 months to complete, learners can start anytime, and can complete this programme as the second and third years of a New Zealand Apprenticeship.

Learning outcomes

Graduates will be able to work independently, take some responsibility for others be able to:

  • supervise and provide instruction to team members using a range of effective communication and interpersonal skills relevant to a horticulture sector.
  • interpret, prepare, implement and monitor a seasonal management plan for an amenity site, including:

    • how plants adapt to different environments.
      Soil management methods for a horticulture site
    • amenity turf botany, and turf management
    • evaluate, prune, and train amenity trees or shrubs
    • methods of environmental sustainability in a horticulture organisation, including legislation
    • plant classification in horticulture
    • work programme across operational areas on an amenity site.
